    OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Under the patronage of H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani and in celebration of the “Italian Design Day” in Qatar, The Embassy of Italy is pleased to announce the exhibition “Beauty, Sustainability, Innovation: Design as a Bridge between Italy and Qatar”.

Organized in collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency in Doha, Peia Associati, Doha Design District and Msheireb Properties, the exhibition is curated by Italian Architect Giampiero Peia and hosted in the glamourous venue of the “Doha Design District” in Msheireb. It will feature 55 design objects from Italian brands and designers, all available in Qatar’s showrooms and used in the country, starting from the Msheireb Downtown District. The exhibition will include the projections of footage dedicated to architectures in which Italy and Qatar cooperated to achieve state-of-the-art and creative solutions to deliver innovative urban landscapes, redefining spatiality and fostering innovation in the field.
“This year’s Italian Design Day in Doha will bring the annual celebration to the next level” commented Ambassador Alessandro Prunas. “We have planned to involve all the relevant actors of the Italian design industry in Qatar, starting from the showrooms and the brands to comprehend entire architectural projects. But our efforts will not constitute a floating island: our project is integrated in Doha’s vibrant creative scene, thanks to the collaboration with Doha Design District, Msheireb Properties and Qatar Creates. I would particularly like to thank H.E. .Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani for her vision and support”.
Mr. Nasser Matar Al-Kawari, Chief Executive Officer, Msheireb Properties said: “We are delighted to host this design exhibition that not only celebrates the strong ties between Qatar and Italy, especially in the field of arts and culture, but also puts the spotlight on the evolution of urban landscapes and the role sustainable design plays in shaping them. Msheireb Properties is committed to promoting sustainability, innovation and smart design, and hosting this exhibition provides us the opportunity to share our experiences as well as learn from design experts. Through innovation in design, we can make a real difference and inspire the new generations to embrace sustainability across all the various aspects of life. We thank The Embassy of Italy and the contributing architects and artists for their valuable effort, and we look forward to strengthening our partnerships in the future.”
The exhibition will indeed be followed by another initiative that enriches the cooperation between Italy and Qatar in the field of design, namely the “Guiltless Plastic” project by gallerist Rossana Orlandi, which will be hosted in M7 starting from March 26th. In addition, on March 29th and 30th “Beauty, Sustainability, Innovation: Design as a Bridge between Italy and Qatar” will be happening alongside “Smart City Doha Expo” in Msheireb Downtown Doha. The interlacement between design and smart cities is indeed pivotal to the project, as confirmed by Msheireb itself, a virtuous example of an ideal Smart City where the quality of innovative architecture and urban spaces merge together with avant-garde design to express the best contemporary interpretation of the Qatari identity.
“This exhibition embodies the great bond developed in recent years between Italy and Qatar also in the field of design”, stated Architect Giampiero Peia. “The Hamad International Airport and the United Nations General Assembly Hall in Geneva represent relevant examples: in both cases, designers, workers, companies and products have been the undisputed protagonists of this genuinely Italian “know-how”, something unique in the world. It was also through these projects that it has been possible to actually express the contents of the Qatari identity on international stages, and to promote it through new and creative ideas. The aim of the Italian Design Day is indeed to strengthen this common sensibility to build further collaborations between our countries and their institutions, paving the ground for new cultural events and business opportunities”.
The initiative will be officially inaugurated on Wednesday, March 23rd at 6.30PM, with the participation of Ambassador Alessandro Prunas, Issa Al Mohannadi, Vice Chair of Qatar Museums, Dr. Hafiz Ali Abdulla, Director of Marketing & Communication at Msheireb Properties and Architect Giampiero Peia. The exhibition will be open to the public on a free access basis from March 24th to 30th, from 9AM to 9PM.
