The exhibition “POP-UP” by Italian artist Sabrina Puppin – promoted by the Embassy of Italy in Doha, will take place in Doha on December 10th and 11th, 2020, at the gallery Eiwan Al Gassar (St. Regis Hotel), from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
“Pop-up” literally means someone or something appearing in a place or situation unexpectedly. A pop-up exhibition is a temporary art event, less formal and of short duration; a type of art show more manageable in the current global situation due to Covid-19. At a time when events and cultural initiatives are cancelled or postponed everywhere, travel restrictions and personal freedom limitations affect our lives, artists can just POP-UP to remind us that we should not forget art and culture. The initiative Contemporary Art Day – Italian Contemporary Art in Qatar – promoted by the Embassy of Italy in Doha – is dedicated to this idea. Sabrina Puppin’s conceptual artworks just pop-up out of the fog of these insecure times and take visitors to an abstract world formed by fascinating shapes and colors – not always comforting or reassuring, but certainly out of the ordinary.
Sabrina Puppin’s work uses colors and shapes to test the limits of reality and our perception of it. It is an investigation of the observation and the distorted perception she has of reality. The severe distortions and the abstract nature of the work create room for multiple interpretation of our observation. The world as seen and known begins to dematerialize and the underlying spatial relationships disappear. Reality and perception being two sides of the same coin in the way they interweave and coexist; as perception arises uniquely for each individual who is observing part of reality. The artwork displays a strong and experimental nature in terms of the use of color and form, dematerializing the known object-based world. As a choreographer, Puppin organizes color’s movement within space. The space’s proportions as a stage frame the action of color in a very unique and unexpected way, amplifying or shrinking different aspects of the painting.
Artist Biography
Sabrina Puppin is an internationally exhibited visual artist. Her participations and exhibitions include solo show at Fire Station and Qatar Museums in Doha, Satellite Art Show in Miami, SHIM Gallery and Cluster Gallery in New York, Gorohavaya 6 Gallery in Saint Petersburg and galleries and museums in Germany, China, India and USA. Her work was selected by the curators at Whitney Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York to be included in 2 shows at BWAC. Additionally, she has exhibited twice at the Lalit Kala Akademi in India. Her work is held in collections in Argentina, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Qatar, Russia, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA.
Sabrina Puppin was awarded two residencies from Turquoise Mountain’s Institute in Afghanistan. She developed and was central to the arts programming at the Institute. The programs encompass the Center for Contemporary Arts Afghanistan (CCAA) in Kabul, where she led artist workshops and served as mentor to the region’s artists. Sabrina Puppin was selected as artist in residence at the Qatar pavilion at the Expo 2015 in Milan, Italy.
Italian artist Sabrina Puppin works and lives between Doha and New York City. She obtained a B.A. in art history and studio art, as well as an M.A. in art history and anthropology at the Norwich University/Vermont College in Montpelier, VT. She went on to obtain a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary studies, specializing in Contemporary African Art studies from the Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, OH, and an M.F.A. in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Sixteen edition of Contemporary Art Day – Italian Contemporary Art
The Contemporary Art Day, celebrated this year on December 5, is the major annual event promoted by the AMACI – Association of Italian Museums of Contemporary Art to focus on the Italian art of our times and its public.
AMACI museums and the art venues in Italy that confirm their participation open their doors free of charge to present artists and new ideas through shows, workshops, events and conferences, as part of a multifaceted programme that, year after year, offers the public an opportunity to experience the complex and lively world of contemporary art.
The Contemporary Art Day merits special attention for the important role it intends to play in promoting Italian contemporary culture.
The increase in terms of attendance and participation in the Contemporary Art Days over the past few years has clearly shown the growing attention that Italian museums have paid to AMACI and to an initiative that is destined to become an annual rendezvous on the contemporary art scene in Italy. The event has made it possible to sketch out a map of art today that encompasses not only metropolises but also small cities and towns that have long been very active, where museums have become cultural poles with the mission of presenting and valorizing the activity of contemporary artists.
Thanks to the collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Italian network of Embassies, Consulates and Cultural Institutes abroad have organized from December 5 to 11, 2020, exhibitions, events and initiatives for the enhancement of contemporary Italian art and culture.
